The Thomas Mar Athanasius Institute of Counselling (TMAIC), established in 1984 by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, is a premier institution dedicated to fostering holistic healing through counselling and psychotherapy. Located on the Medical College – Ettumanoor road, just one km from the Medical College and nine km from Kottayam town, TMAIC has been a beacon of hope for individuals, families, and communities across Kerala and beyond. Our History

We aim to empower our clients and students by integrating contemporary psychological practices with spiritual insights, ensuring the highest standards of care. Our mission extends to offering affordable services, with subsidies for the financially needy, ensuring that no one is turned away due to lack of resources.

Our Team

Our institute is powered by a dedicated team of competent clinical professionals, led by our Director, Rev. Dr. Abraham Mathew. Appointed by the Governing Board of the Kottayam – Kochi Diocese of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, our team includes experienced counsellors, psychologists, and faculty members who provide personalized, high-quality care. We also collaborate with psychiatric professionals for referrals when needed, ensuring comprehensive support for our clients.

Clinical Facilities

There is a team of competent clinical persons at the Institute. The Institute provides personal, family, and group counselling.  Following the contemporary standards of practice the TMAIC ensures highest quality of care to our clients. Necessary psychiatric help is given by appropriate referral.  The clients come from all age groups, all strata of society and from all parts of Kerala and beyond. The Institute provides quality service at an affordable cost to the public. We also provide appropriate subsidy to the finacially needy. No one is sent away for want of money. An average of 140 sessions is conducted per month.

Our Training Programs

Beyond counselling, TMAIC is a hub for professional development, offering courses such as the Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCPC), Certificate in School Counselling and Psychotherapy (CSCP), Master’s in Counselling and Psychotherapy (MCP), and Certificate in Christian Counselling (CCC). These programs, supported by our expert faculty and supervisors, equip aspiring counsellors and psychologists with the skills needed for impactful careers. We also conduct seminars and workshops to foster continuous learning for professionals and the public.
